Global Plymouth - a new journey
21 August 2024
If you head into our '100 Journeys' gallery you'll notice a brand new case display. It introduces our 'Global Plymouth' project which is enabling us to work with audiences, artists and communities to make changes to the space over the next year or two.
The case outlines the size and scope of our world cultures collection and asks questions about its future. It focuses on three historic items from the late 1800s/early 1900s from East and South-East Asia – a Chinese soldier’s uniform, a Korean tobacco pipe and a tiger puppet from Myanmar (formerly Burma) - and explores their historical, colonial and museum contexts, highlighting the many different stories they can tell.
One way that historic collections can be re-interpreted and reframed is through contemporary art and the case also includes a tiger puppet titled Black Water Tiger by Korean-Canadian artist Zadie Xa. The puppet was created in 2022 for an exhibition at The Box and acquired by us earlier this year with support from the Henry Moore Foundation.
Would you like to be part of the conversation? We'd love to know your ideas and opinions on the future of the 100 Journeys gallery. If you're visiting, please use the QR code by the case to complete our short questionnaire. Paper copies are also available from our Welcome Desk.
We're also running a free Bitesize talk about the display on Wednesday 18 September, as part of Art History Festival 2024. Why not book a ticket and come along?
