Artists announced for final leg of British Art Show 9 in Plymouth
British Art Show 9 (BAS9), Hayward Gallery Touring’s landmark contemporary art exhibition, will culminate in Plymouth this autumn (8 October – 23 December), after successful showings in Aberdeen, Wolverhampton and Manchester. 37 artists have been confirmed for this fourth and final stop on the national tour, which brings the work of some of the UK’s most exciting contemporary artists to four cities every five years.

Someone Who Waits by Spencer Gore
This oil painting, which dates from 1907, was purchased for Plymouth’s permanent art collections from the artist’s widow in 1958. It’s called ‘Someone Who Waits’ and was painted by Spencer Gore (1878-1914). It's one of the many works of art currently on show in our 'Dress Code: Fashion Stories from The Box' exhibition.

George Shaw: The Local - From Coventry to the world
'George Shaw: The Local' has just opened at The Box. This major exhibition by the Dartmoor-based artist who was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2011, features existing and new works and is divided into three sections. The first section takes you through a series of scenes from the Tile Hill area of Coventry where he grew up - but they'll probably look very familiar to anyone who lives in a city.

Bags of style
The ‘Dress Code – Fashion Stories from The Box’ exhibition includes a number of items from our costume accessories collection, and features a section which looks at how jewellery, shoes, bags and more have been used throughout the centuries to enhance an outfit as well as communicate someone’s identity and status. These three bags can be seen on display in the exhibition and each have a story to tell.
