Meet the artist: Vija Celmins
Latvian American artist Vija Celmins has a career that spans six decades and 40 high profile exhibitions. 23 of her works are on display at The Box until 12 January 2025. Drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection at Tate and National Galleries of Scotland, they provide a fascinating glimpse into her practice and inspiration. Find out more about her here.

Plaque honouring ‘father of civil engineering’ restored to Smeaton’s Tower
To mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of the renown civil engineer, John Smeaton, who created Plymouth’s most iconic landmark, a plaque recognising his achievements as a civil engineer has been restored to Smeaton’s Tower.

3D printed plankton dress arrives at The Box from Buckingham Palace
A 3D printed dress inspired by marine plankton and created in collaboration between Arts University Plymouth and Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), has gone on display at The Box, after impressing attendees at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London and even making an appearance outside of Buckingham Palace.

Sculpture from The Box's art collection goes on display in Barcelona
A well-known sculpture from The Box's art collection has gone on loan to an exciting new exhibition in Barcelona. 'Art in Stone' can be seen at the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera's Casa Milà until early next year. It features works by a wide range of famous artists and shows how the materials they chose influenced and shaped their ideas.

800,000 visits, international exhibitions and awards – The Box continues to impress as it reports on success
The Box has welcomed more than 817,000 visitors since it opened in September 2020! We presented our annual report to Plymouth City Council's scrutiny committee on 17 July and shared how we're working hard to care for the city’s historic collections, explore the important stories and issues that impact us all and be a social space that offers everyone who steps through our door an amazing experience.

Major coup for Plymouth as National Portrait Gallery exhibition heads to The Box
A major international exhibition, featuring some of the hottest names in contemporary art heads to The Box from the National Portrait Gallery this month for its only UK showing outside London. 'The Time is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure', which received five-star reviews during its London run, will be free to visit in Plymouth despite costing £16 in the capital.
