Spotlight on Zahra Khanum, Discovery Media Assistant

30 April 2024

My name is Zahra Khanum. I am the newly appointed Discovery Media Assistant for our BFI funded Reimagining the Film Archive programme at the Box, Plymouth.

I support the discovery and production of digital content and provide access to our archival digital content for a range of external requests including our commissioned researchers and digital projects. My role is to uncover and digitise under-represented narratives, hidden figures and voices that are waiting to be discovered within the incredible media archive film collections at The Box.

This is an entry level role funded by the BFI that has given me the chance to develop numerous skills in archiving and digitising a range of moving image formats. I started this role in January 2024 and in three months I have grasped the inner workings of the organisation; and continue to work behind-the-scenes alongside an amazing team of archivists, researchers, and specialists in media digitisation.

This role has been part of my professional development as an artist-filmmaker and aspiring curator. It actively exercises my editing abilities and critical and research skills that can lend a scope to the future of digital preservation and expand the accessibility of archives within museums for future creative projects.
