Talk and Book Signing: Hettie Judah 'On Art and Motherhood'

Join us for this exclusive event and book signing! Hear Hettie Judah, writer and exhibition curator, as she shares insights from her research for her book, 'Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood' which explores the joys, messes, myths and mishaps of parenting through visual culture.

Hettie's talk will last for up to an hour and will also include a Q&A. She will be signing books for 30 minutes afterwards.

Hettie will be in conversation with Jelena Sofronijevic, Contemporary Art Curator at The Box. They will discuss some of the key themes from Hettie's book and touring exhibition, drawing on artworks from ancient goddess artefacts to contemporary interpretations of pregnancy.

Hettie will highlight works by Turner Prize nominee Barbara Walker, Claudette Johnson, and Njideka Akunyili Crosby - currently on display at The Box as part of The Time is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure, and Dr Eva McGrath and Prof Jill Shawe's Immersion Maternal project at the University of Plymouth, featured in Planet Ocean. Books will be available to buy from The Box's shop.

Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood is curated for Hayward Gallery Touring. Following its debut at the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol, it has travelled to mac Birmingham, where it is on view until 29 September 2024, before continuing its tour to the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield, and DCA in Dundee. It is accompanied by an illustrated book published by Thames and Hudson.
