We work with a wide range of communities across the city and beyond, creating opportunities for everyone to explore and learn about our collections, heritage and exhibitions in a positive and welcoming environment. Our activities include hands-on workshops, group sessions and guided tours.

The Making Home group

Making Home

Our onsite community initiative is designed to make sure everybody feels at home at The Box.

Through guided tours and special craft workshops our Making Home project works with under-represented groups and cultural communities from across the city.

Our plain speaking tours provide an accessible and fun experience for everyone to enjoy, and are available at selected times during the year linked to key exhibitions that are on display.

Women talking and doing crafts

Craft Collective

A safe-space for women of all ages and cultures who meet every Friday to share and learn traditional crafts.

The Women’s Craft Collective was originally set up in partnership with the Plymouth and District Racial Equality Council for women of all ages and backgrounds to come together to share and learn traditional crafts.

The group now attracts around 30 regular participants, from advanced knitters to keen novices, who practise knitting and crochet amongst other craft activities.

The group undertakes regular projects for a variety of charities, including recent work that saw them donate knitted clothing to Shekinah, regular donations to Derriford Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and more recently support charity work in Gambia. You may also be able to buy some of the amazing knitted goods made by the group in our shop, or spot displays of their work in our Simmons Learning Room display case.

The group meet in the Simmons Learning Room every Friday morning from 10am-12pm. There is a voluntary membership fee of £1.50 per week.

At present our group is full. We regret that due to demand, we have closed our waiting list.
