Permissions and Policies

Here you can find information about our reproduction agreement, copyright and supplying of files to help you evaluate images and films.

Sample reproduction agreements

Here are examples of our agreements:

Copyright

The Box does not own the copyright for all the works in the collections, so it is important to check the status with our image and film service.

For works out of copyright, that have not been supplied by our image and film service, staff are able to carry out due diligence enabling verification, attribution and a review of any terms of use in the object contract. This checking is crucial for enquiries where the work is intended for publication, ensuring best practices for authentic and responsible representation.

The effort and cost of supplying digital content from the works in the collections is permitted to be recovered via licensing or service fees.

Low resolution copies

Where possible we can supply low resolution images free of charge for viewing purposes only. These are transferred as thumbnail size 72dpi which may mean the text is blurred.

We supply .MP4 files for moving images free of charge with embedded timecode and The Box logo for viewing purposes only. These are transferred for downloading and can be used in editing before the high resolution copy is licensed.
