Lizzie Ridout

Lizzie is an artist living and working in Cornwall. Her work focuses on the material manifestations of language: reading, writing and speaking, and the forms, containers, surfaces, materials and media through which we experience these actions.

Artist update

Throughout summer 2021 Lizzie used her development bursary to work on existing and new projects, all of which use visual devices that represent paper as a surface for language. Ruled lines in old school exercise books; speech balloons from comics annuals; PDF symbols and their physical papery counterparts, all featured in her work.

These devices and the ideas behind them were explored through ongoing studio-based drawing and writing and a three-week residency at 'Residency in a Shed', Penryn (organised by artist Georgia Gendall). Lizzie also developed a presentation for the 'Symposium on Aspect Change' at University of the Arts Bern, Switzerland in autumn 2021 and wrote and drew a contribution to the book 'An Atlas of Aspect Change' by Tine Melzer. The book will be published by Rollo Press in 2022.

As part of her bursary, Lizzie also worked with artist and filmmaker Jasper Fell-Clark to produce a short film documenting her ongoing studio practice and projects for The Box. You can watch it below.
